Is Propecia Dangerous?

What is Propecia?

Propecia is a medicine that has been approved by FDA for use in male hair loss patients. It has been found that the drug allows the regrowth of hair in men suffering from male pattern baldness. The performance of Propecia has been wonderful in clinical trials as 9 in 10 men found improvement in their hair loss condition. They either experienced growth of new hairs on their scalp or found that they are no longer losing their hairs. As many as two out of three men increased their hair count after using propecia.

How Propecia Works?

Propecia belongs to a class of medicines knows as 5-alpha-reductase-inhibitors. This group of medicines is used to cure conditions which are caused by DiHydroTestosterone also known as DHT. DHT is a hormone produced by the human body using testosterone. In males suffering from male pattern baldness, DHT limits the ability of the hairs present on the top of the head to grow. This results in hair line first becoming thin and then going back. Since Propecia belongs to 5-alpha-reductase-inhibitors group of medicine, it stops the production of DHT in the body. Thus there are no DHT attacking hair follicles which results in no or reduced hair fall and a regrowth of hairs.

Causes of Hair Loss

Hair loss is a condition that is present in both men and women. In both cases, hair fall significantly reduces the confidence of the male or female suffering from hair loss and makes the person distressed. Some of the most common causes of hair loss in both men and women are explained below:

Alopecia Areata – This is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system starts to attack hair glands present on the scalp of the head. In most cases the damage done to the hair strands by the disease is not permanent and hair can grow back. The disease mostly occurs in people who have some other underlying autoimmune condition such as diabetes, thyroid disease or vitiligo. However, new hair loss advances have seen medication being developed to treat this disease.
Annagen effluvium – This is a condition in which hair loss in a patient is caused by a medication or medical treatment. The most common reason for hair loss because of a medical treatment occurs in cancer because of chemotherapy, radiotherapy or immunotherapy.
Telogen Effluvium – This is a cause of hair loss in which a patient loses hair because of body’s reaction to change hormones, extreme stress, a severe illness, long term illness or a sudden change in diet.
Male Pattern Baldness – It is a hereditary condition which affects only men. In this condition, hairline initially becomes thin and then starts to retreat. Propecia is manufactured to cure this cause of hair loss in patients. This condition is the most dominant cause of hair loss in men and almost one in two males who are older than 50 years old suffer from this condition.
Female Pattern Baldness – This cause of hair loss effects only women and is caused by the decrease in female hormones in women through menopause.

Side Effects of Propecia

Propecia is one of only two medicines approved by FDA for the treatment of hair loss condition. It has shown wonderful results in a number of patients. A few side effects of the drug have also been reported and a few lawsuits against the medication have been brought up in US courts as cited by National Law Journal. However, all these lawsuits claim that the manufacturer of the drug did not provide complete information about the side effects of the medication. The actual side effects of Propecia are no more than side effects for almost all medicines. Most of the people who use the drug do not have any side effect at all while enjoying all its benefits. Most of the side effects of the drug reported in literature are sexual side effects but only a few people experience them. Side effects are caused by all medicines and Propecia’s side effects are not so much to classify it is a dangerous medicine.

The most common side effect of the drug reported is decrease sex drive or desire. This side effect happens in only two out of 100 patients using the medicine.

Erectile Dysfunction is another side effect of the drug, but it is even rarer with only one out of 100 patients suffering from it.

Allergic reaction and depression are some other side effects of the medicine.
